The Lister Centenary Celebrations will be marked by a two-day conference based around six symposia, six keynote/eponymous lectures and six sessions of short papers focused on various aspects of sepsis and infections, which are as much an issue for today’s surgeons as they were an insurmountable challenge to the practice of safe surgery until Lister’s breakthrough. The conference will conclude with a public lecture.

Alongside the conference activity there will be an exhibition based on Lister’s life and achievements. This exhibition will bring together original artefacts from The University of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Physicians, in the City of Edinburgh. It will explore the themes of microbiology, microscopy, Lister's experiments and his legacy using original artefacts, images and documents.
