The Lister Surgical Skills Competition, in association with Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies, has seen regional heats taking place throughout the UK, from August to December 2011, to shortlist the top medical students from each region for the Grand Final of the competition which will take place at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) on Saturday 11 February 2012.
20 medical students (3rd, 4th or 5th year) competed in each of the four Scottish Deaneries to win a travel and accommodation package to RCSEd in February. The four finalists from each Scottish region will join finalists from England, Wales and Northern Ireland to compete in the Grand Final for the chance to win a week at the Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies Skills Centre in Hamburg. East
The East of Scotland Regional Heat took place at the Cushieri Surgical Skills Centre, University of Dundee on 26 October 2011. The judges on the night were the Regional Advisers for the East of Scotland Mr Graham Cormack, Mr Sam Majumdar and Mr John Nagy with the help and support of Mr Alastair Murray (Co-Convener for Regional Surgical Advisers), Mr David Watt, Mr Girivasan Muthukumaraswamy and Mr Oliver Shapter. Congratulations to winner, Maxi Kellner and runner-up, John Kennedy, both from Dundee University. Maxi Kellner will now go through to the Grand Final of the Lister Surgical Skills Competition on Saturday 11 February 2012.

North
Regional Surgical Advisers Ms Aileen McKinley, Mr Euan Munro and Mr Angus Watson ran the North of Scotland Regional Heat on Tuesday 1 November at the Suttie Centre, Aberdeen for senior medical students from Aberdeen University. Congratulations to winner, Nicholas Milliken and runner-up, Martin Van. Both Nicholas and Martin will now go through to the Grand Final of the Lister Surgical Skills Competition on 11 February 2012, after Martin Van won the Golden Ticket prize after being randomly selected out of all the runner-ups in the UK to compete in the Grand Final.

South East
Senior medical students from Edinburgh and St Andrews universities competed in the South East Scotland Heat on Saturday 19 November at the Skills Lab in the RCSEd’s Quincentenary Hall. The heat was led by Regional Surgical Advisers Miss Anna Paisley, Mr Zahid Raza and Mr Phil Walmsley. Congratulations to winner, Alex Eros and runner-up, Jason Ting, both from The University of Edinburgh. Alex Eros will now go through to the Grand Final of the Lister Surgical Skills Competition on Saturday 11 February 2012.

West
The West of Scotland Regional Heat took place at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley on Wednesday 28 September. Students from Glasgow University were led in the competition by their Regional Surgical Advisers Mr Andrew Renwick as the lead and Mr Jon Dearing, Mr Martyn Flett, Mr Calan Mathieson and Mr Chris Rodger. Congratulations to winner, Louise Murchison and runner-up, Angela Hill. Louise Murchison will go through to the Grand Finla of our Lister Surgical Skills Competition on 11 February 2012.
