Organised by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Lister Surgical Skills Competition, in association with Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies, saw senior medical students throughout the UK competing in one of 19 Deanery-based regional heats, from September to December 2011. Those who were judged to have the best surgical skills in the regional heats competed in the Grand Final of the Competition which took place in Edinburgh on Saturday 11 February 2012, as part of the Lister Centenary Celebrations.

In addition to being a notable addition to a medical student’s CV, there were terrific opportunities available to the winners:

Regional Winners: A travel and accommodation package to compete in the Grand Final in Edinburgh in February 2012

Grand Final Winner: A trip to Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies’ Surgical Training Institute in Hamburg

The winner of the Grand Final received the opportunity to visit  The European Surgical Institute, a  world-class medical education facility located in Hamburg, Northern Germany. The European Surgical Institute (ESI) is one of Europe’s leading centres for Continuing Medical Education. The Institute’s  mission is to measurably improve the success of individuals and organisations involved in the health care industry, teaching the latest minimally invasive surgery skills using expert teaching staff and state of the art simulation technology. The competition winner was invited to the ESI over the course of two days to experience a tailored programme based on their requirements, which  included a facility tour, practical hands-on further skills training and the opportunity to shadow a programme and interact with delegates.

RSMLogoThe Royal Society of Medicine (RSM)  sponsored some runners-up prizes for both the regional heats and the Grand Final. Regional runners-up received a year’s free RSM student membership, and the Grand Final runner-up received free RSM student membership until they qualify as a doctor, in addition to a £50 voucher for the RSM restaurant.
